Well this isn’t really widely believed but to me, punk is an attitude, basically saying YOU in the general direction of all (or at least most) authority figures (any band can be like this). Punk rock is the kind of music that comes to mind when most people hear “punk”, usually fast instruments, power chords (or barre chords in some cases,) and in most genres aggressive vocals. Pop punk usually falls under the second definition and not the first. That’s just my definition, not everyone’s.

And guitar work in melodic hardcore does sound kind like faster, distorted pop punk.

Actually NOFX is melodic hardcore not pop punk, its sound is much more heavily distorted than that of a flagship pop punk band like green day

Pop punk is still …
Pop punk is still punk, it just has a bad habit of sucking and having a big scene kid/teen girl following.
Bad Religion may be one of my favorite bands but i can never forgive them for influencing so many pop punk bands although i don’t consider them to be pop punk themselves (sans most of Empire Strikes First and Stranger than Fiction which are both awesome anyway.)
