MEAT PUPPETS - “Lake of Fire” live in Austin (1/17/99)

Now relocated to Austin, TX - the Meat Puppets performs “Lake of Fire” at Emo’s on Jan. 17, 1999. Being a Sims Foundation charity show, the Meat Puppets headlined the bill with openers Godzilla Motor Co. and Skrew. This version of “Lake of Fire” is short and highly explosive, showing an exciting, fresh renewal for the Meat Puppets. Although Curt Kirtwood is the only committed orignal Meat Puppet (although rythym guitarist, Dle Ellison, and bassist Andrew Duplantis were in the band during the “Golden Lies” era. Anyway, back to the PJs, the band (exept Sahm) wore cute matching pink PJs during the performance! This was an extraodinary night at Emo’s - hope you can enjoy this vigorously powerful onslaught. Because of its effective catchiness, no wonder Kurk Cobain covered this 1early 1982 song while in Nirvana!

“Lake of Fire” lyric by Curt Kurkwood

(Chorus)
“Where do bad folks go when they die?
They don’t go to heaven where the angels fly.
They go to a lake of fire and fry,
Won’t see ‘em again ’til the 4th of July”

“I knew a lady who came from Duluth,
Got bit by a dog with a rabid tooth.
She went to her grave just a little too soon,
flew and laid down on the yellow moon.”

(Repeat Chorus)

“People cry and people moan,
Look for a dry place to call their home.
Try to find some place to rest their bones,
While the angels and the devils
Try to make ‘em their own”

(Repeat Chorus)
(guitar lead)

Yeah I think Kurt did and the Puppets did a of a job at Unplugged. Enough so as to becoming the unofficial original track in my book. The meat puppets wrote it, then they justified it with Kurt at the Unplugged sessions.

    I’m sure the Meat Puppets take this as an utmost compliment, however, Curt Kirkwood, the vocalist/lead-guitarist is the only original memeber in this performance. But with the Austin-legendary Shandom Sahm on drums makes this a special Austin experience. (~);}
